KEF Reference R1 Bookshelf Speaker
Three Way Bookshelf Speaker
Produced with the smart use of KEF 's innovative technologies, Reference 1 clearly says that you don't need a big and expensive cabinet to enjoy high performance sound.
ABOUT KEF
KEF, an British speaker manufacturer founded in 1961, has been a proud pioneer of sonic excellence in its industry from day one. Born in Kent, England, with the abbreviation of Kent Engineering & Faundry, KEF has spread its quality to the whole world and has been continuing its activities under the GP Acoustics umbrella as a hi-fi audio product manufacturer since 2018.
Reference 1 uses the latest Uni-Q driver array in KEF's 125 mm (5 in) size MF/HF build to create an impressively realistic, large-scale soundstage. In addition to these drivers, a new 165 mm (6.5 inch) bass driver with a sensational cone/cone design is included in the system. Uni-Q's inherent wide-stage sound character and its structure that distributes the sounds evenly shows that the Reference 1 will also take on the role of a serious rear channel speaker in the home theater system.
Everyone in the room can enjoy the rich and incredibly realistic soundstage/image. This setup places them right at the heart of the spectacular performance, allowing them to become true sound enthusiasts who feel like they're listening to music not at home but in a concert hall.
The Reference series embodies KEF's philosophy of "Integrated System Design." Each component is optimized both individually and as part of the whole, allowing each driver unit to showcase its abilities to the fullest. The result is a speaker that delivers performance far beyond what the individual parts would suggest.
Designed in Maidstone, UK So KEF's Home
The Reference series was a bold move for KEF in 1973. The series broke new ground in terms of computer aided design and high performance. The Reference series is still today inspected and manufactured directly by KEF engineers in Maidstone, UK.
Designed To Be Only The Best
The reference series is the heart of KEF. It is KEF's expression of an absolute obsession with audio performance, where decades of innovative technological research have become physical. Each Reference speaker is designed and manufactured from the ground up by a single KEF technician for harmony and flawless performance .
Two drivers, a single point
At the heart of The Reference is the Uni-Q™ point source driver array. A state-of-the-art vented aluminium dome tweeter at the exact acoustic centre of a highly sophisticated midrange driver that delivers flawless natural sound across a wider listening area.
A strong foundation
Clean, rich and articulate bass is the foundation of great stereo or multichannel sound. KEF's Reference Series bass driver has a massive vented magnet assembly, a large aluminium voice coil and an exceptionally light and stiff alloy cone. Whatever the volume, dynamics and power handling are superb.
The smallest details, revealed
Shadow Flare drastically reduces harmful cabinet diffraction, allowing the Uni-Q to work at its highest level. A precision-designed surface extends the waveguide effect of Uni-Q for improved clarity, particularly when it comes to the subtle nuances of plucked strings and other percussive sounds.
Computer-modelled perfection
Hand finished in pair-matched wood veneers, The Reference cabinets have computer-optimised bracing geometry to minimise secondary radiation from the sides and Constrained Layer Damping to turn what little vibration is left into heat.
Even the smallest details are in the middle
KEF’s engineers use advanced software to model the ideal crossover. But every component is auditioned by the ultimate measure: the human ear. Perfection takes time, but the results are plain to hear. Reference crossovers are even decoupled from the cabinet to minimise vibration and crosstalk.
Fighting turbulence
Flexible port technology is used to reduce port resonance. Each port is adjustable to allow users to modify the sound to suit their room. The flare and profile of each port is calculated by computational fluid dynamics to avoid turbulent air noise that might colour the sound.
Pushing Boundaries...
For nearly 50 years, KEF engineers have pushed the boundaries of what is possible with The Reference. Ground-breaking in its first incarnation, each subsequent iteration of The Reference has added to the world’s knowledge of the science of acoustics.
Standardized "Standards"
How does each iteration of The Reference maintain its status as the loudspeaker against which others are judged? Through pair matching to within 0.5dB tolerance to the laboratory maintained prototype; and the continued development of ground-breaking technologies and supreme levels of craftsmanship.
The Four Aims
The Reference series has four broad acoustic aims which underpin KEF’s entire acoustic philosophy. If you would like to understand our engineering and acoustic ideas in detail, please download The KEF Reference White Paper written by our R&D team in the UK.
Limitless Home Theater Experience
The Reference series produces exceptional dynamic sound and bass power, bringing music notes and movie soundtracks to life, transforming your movie experience into something truly unique. The KEF Reference series is equipped to meet a wide range of needs, including architectural in-wall models that are THX Ultra certified.
A Glorious History
For more than 50 years, the Reference series has been recognized with awards from major sound authorities around the world. Praised for its realistic sound performance and the consistency maintained across all models of the series, this latest Reference series continues to impress experts.
Kent Engineering and Foundry Editions
In 1961 Raymond Cooke founded KEF in a Nissen hut formerly owned by Kent Engineering and Foundry. To celebrate this heritage we created two bespoke editions of the Reference range. The Kent Engineering & Foundry editions combine the latest Reference technology in a style that subtly evokes KEF's rich pedigree.
